Solid Wall Insulation:

Any houses built after the 1990s are required by law to be built with wall insulation installed to keep the heat in. However, if your house was built before the 1990s it may have no wall insulation at all.

There are three predominant types of wall insulation which are external wall insulation, internal wall insulation and cavity wall insulation.

Depending on the wall type of your property, you may be eligible for free insulation measures.

Internal Wall Insulation:

There are up to 8.5 million homes built in the UK with solid walls. The UK government estimates that over 7.7 million of these are uninsulated. Internal wall insulation can save you up to £700 a year on energy bills. The amount you save will depend on the size of your property.

To have internal wall insulation installed typically costs around £7,500 but with the help of the ECO4 or GBIS schemes, it could cost you nothing at all.

External Wall Insulation:

External wall insulation is fitted by attaching 2 layers to the exterior of a property. The first layer is the insulation itself made of EPS, mineral wool or phenolic insulation. The second layer is a render layer made from sand and cement mixture, acrylics, or silicone. The render layer’s purpose is to protect the building from weather and can also improve the building’s thermal performance.

On top of keeping your house warm and lowering your heating bills. External wall insulation looks incredible and can improve the value of your property by an astonishing 14%.

External wall insulation is very expensive costing from £7,000 all the way up to £17,500; depending on whether the property is terraced, semi-detached or detached. Even a measure this expensive can be fully funded by the government and UK energy suppliers.
